I went with a group of other solo travellers on a cycling and hiking trip through Madagascar. Lucien was our guide and we also had a support team that drove the vans, fixed the bikes, etc. Lucien was an amazing guide, very knowledgeable about Madagascar and always enthusiastic to share information or visit another site. The trip was extremely well organized and the support team was very professional, with the result that all our needs were well catered to. I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Lucien and his team and would highly recommend this company for any trips in Madagascar!
If you are visiting Madagascar as a non-native traveler it is paramount to have a guide- this will ensure seamless travel, communication, dietary accommodations, transportation, safety and overall joy. It was a joy to join Lucien on his company's tour as he was infinitely knowledgeable about the beauty and history of the country. It really adds to the trip to have somebody who can interact with locals and support you in engaging with the people and country and whatever way you feel most comfortable. He is not overbearing and has strong awareness of group dynamics and subtleties, making him an excellent trip guide.
If you have never been to the country, be mindful that moving from point A to point B will take longer (for me, coming from the United States, this was the case). This is a result of road maintenance. Lucien will help craft an itinerary that is suited to your liking, and I recommend to be mindful and clear about transportation duration ahead of time. If you elect to bike, this is less of a concern as you will move at the pace you move.
All in all, I highly recommend joining Madanature Bike tours while visiting the beautiful country of Madagascar.

I am pleased to share I took a fantastic 15-day cycling tour with Lucien and his crew in June 2025. Madagascar is a beautiful country with friendly people, amazing wildlife and great biking opportunities. This tour will not be for everyone, but if you are a reasonably fit cyclist and willing to put up with the normal ups-and-downs of adventure travel (laughably bad roads, occasional brief power outages) then you will find this the experience of a lifetime.
Lucien and his team are first-rate. This is an experienced group of tour leaders who worked from dawn to dusk making sure the bikes were in good shape, we had great roadside lunches and everyone was looked after. Hotels were good for that part of the world and breakfast and dinner were generally excellent. Lucien even helped me organize some post-tour travel accomodations while juggling his other responsibilties.
Lucien and his team are first-rate. We met a Swiss couple in Manambolo who raved about their guide Lucien.
During the next three days we saw Lucien again and again and were convinced that we wanted to make our trip from Tana to Tulear with Lucien from madanature-bike-tours.mg. Luckily, he still had a window of 10 days off.
We spent unforgettable days with Lucien and Jean, the driver. Both are lovable, attentive people.
Lucien speaks French, English and even German. He has great expertise in biology, geography and the different cultures here in Madagascar.
We did a lot together, he always responded to our special requests whenever possible and we laughed a lot together.
Jean is an attentive, careful driver, which is a great advantage in these poor road conditions. We have always felt safe.
Lucien also told us how he plans and organizes his bike tours meticulously. A tempting offer to come back.

I wanted to give you brief information about my tour experience. Your two drivers were excellent and very accommodating to me. I was not well during the night walk but I was taken care of my driver to get back to my room. The hotel was charming, service was excellent and food was good as well. The lunch at the other hotel, I don't recall the name, was so testy. I really enjoyed all of the tour parts. The guides English was fine and I only hope that I tipped them accordingly. I handed your card to a couple from Canada while still in Antsirabe. Word of mouth is the best advertisement it is said! I appreciate all of the arrangements and hopefully I will again visit Mada in the future. I would very highly recommend your company Madanature bike tours to anyone asking.

Uno de los mejores recuerdos que nos llevamos de Madagascar es nuestro guia Lucien.
Madagascar es casi imposible recorrerlo por tu cuenta, por lo que un guia/conductor es imprescindible. Además, para poder visitar lo máximo posible del país son muchas horas en coche, cosa que podría haber hecho que nuestro viaje fuera menos divertido de no ser por Lucien. Él hacía que todos los trayectos fueran una parte divertida del viaje. Nunca olvidaremos como nos explicaba mil y una información de tribus, fauna, flora, incluso de política... Su vasto conocimiento de país hacía que las largas jornadas de viaje fueran muchísimo más soportables haciendo miniparadas en las que siempre teníamos algo a visitar. Sus muchos años de experiencia, y sobretodo la pasión por su trabajo, hacen de él un guia fantástico, yo lo recomendaría 100% sin miedo a equivocarme.
Además con su fantástico sentido del humor nos ha hecho vivir un viaje muy divertido, fantástico, increíble.

MITSIKITSIKY TSARA (malagasy: schön lächeln): so lässt sich unsere abenteuerliche Tour mit Lucien Madanature bike tours kurzfassen! Angefangen in Andasibe, wo wir die Vielfalt des Dschungels und vor allem den "König der Lemuren", den Indri Indri bewunderten führte uns unsere Reise über Antsirabe an die äußerst warme Westküste; sogar beim Essen tropfte uns hier der Schweiß von der Stirn 😃
Die vielen Fragen zu Fauna und Flora sowie zur madagassischen Kultur beantwortete uns Lucien geduldig und sehr kompetent; auch organisationstechnisch lief alles wunderbar und stressfrei ab! We spent 3 weeks in Madagascar, visiting the most amazing and interesting sites (from Tana to the west to visit the Baobabs avenue and the Tsingy, and then to the south to relax on the beach, visit different Natural Parks and see a lot of lemurs!). 😍😍
Also, we had the chance to experience a curious local festivity that we could not have visited without the help of a guide like Lucien Madanature bike tours.
I traveled with my husband to Madagascar in August 2022 for the first time. As we wanted to have a deep and authentic experience, we decided to look for a private guide and driver. We can totally say that we were extremely lucky to find and share our trip with Lucien. He is the perfect guide we could have. He has deep knowledge of Madagascar (well, he knows about everything!), we learnt a lot with him; he was so flexible, and he helped us with our itinerary, looking for accommodation, local restaurants, and finding the best experiences and activities to do. Unsere Rad-Tour durch Madagaskar mit Lucien war außerordentlich individuell geplant & betreut , erfreulicherweise pfiffig organisiert , abweichend von konventionell geplanten Reiserouten.
Der Rhythmus war zeitlich sehr gut aufgeteilt, meist 3 Tage biking, dann alternatives trekking oder kulturelles Erkunden zur Regeneration der beanspruchten Beine!
Ebenso äußerst wertvoll die Organisation der Übernachtungen , z.T. nur 1 Nacht , dann wieder 2-3 Tage zur besseren Adaption an die Umgebung .
Der Informationsfluß war überwältigend, so viele Details zu den vielen ethnischen Gruppen, die Menschen dort bekamen mehr "Gesicht".
Perfekt waren die absolute Kompetenz als guide in Flora & Fauna!!
Wir planen jetzt schon den nächsten trip mit Lucien & stehen in freundschaftlicher Korrespondenz miteinander!!!

All the accommodations were organized, friendly and very comfortable; no issues and easy. Lucien made healthy, tasty lunches and we had plenty!! Safety and trip details were clear and well done. He knows bicycles, he knows 3 languages, he knows what it takes to be a friendly, organized, fun and competent guide. My favorite quality of Lucien is his knowledge of his country! He knows the history, culture, plants, animals, people, roads, etc, etc!!! We have been traveling this beautiful country with these nice and always friendly people since 2013. We have our personal guide and now friend "Ra-Lucien" to thank for this fact. (Misaotra anao) From Antsirabe to the hottest place Miandrivazo, across the river to the Baobab Avenue, hiking in the Tsingy's, then back down to Toliara, up to the sapphire mines in Ilakaka, Isalo Window and NP, Ranomafana and back to Tana. Then on towards MoraManga, Zahamena NP with countless lemurs. Forgot something?! Forgotten anything?! Oh yeah, a lot of course: The island of Nosy Be in the north, for example, invites you to go diving. And the large port city of Toamasina in the east with a great market (RUM & vanilla) and of course the small port town of Foulepointe/Ivongo for the ferry, with subsequent transfer to the island of Sainte Marie. You can relax wonderfully here… I would do any tour again with Lucien & Team in a heartbeat. They know their country very well and know what is important. Last year in 2023 we went on a trekking tour with Lucien & team from Maroantsetra to the well-known Masoala Forest. (Primary and secondary) with a conclusion on Nosy Mangabe. It was once again breathtaking and exhausting at the same time.
This was my third Mada trip with Guide Lucien. That says a lot !!! After 2 great bicycle trips, I came back with my son and his friend for a tour. Lucien knows his country very well and put together another smooth, well organized, cultural and nature tour- we all loved it! Seeing lemurs, walking through parks, eating local food, seeing Mada culture- it was splendid. Lucien’s knowledge, experience, friendly manner and English speaking make him an outstanding guide!!!
